The drive home didn’t leave much of an impact, not that I expected it to. Jason wasn’t home when I got back, giving me a much-needed opportunity to call his drug dealer of a father. After checking the time—early enough—I gave Josh a ring.

“Hello?” Josh’s raspy voice creaked through the phone line.

“Josh, it’s Tyler. Finally found ya.”

“Tyler? How’d you get my number?”

I shat out an explanation he could understand, including going bum-fuck north where they fucked cows for a living. “I want to know more about my father. He’s gonna puke out bricks for what he did to Cam.”

“You don’t remember?”

Of course I didn’t, dipshit. “No, Josh. I don’t.”

“It’s a little much to say over the phone, but you know what? I’ll talk. On one condition.”

“Which is?”

“Jason listens too. I want to see my son. Bring Justin as well if you can. Call me when you’re ready.”

I hung up. Guess Josh didn’t know where Justin was after his own prison term. To be fair, it was kind of ironic that the only straight guy in my generation ended up in Gaytown. Good riddance—he’s just as bad as my father.

As if he could sense my presence from TCS’s office, Jason barged into the apartment with open arms. “Tyler!”

“Calm your jets, Jace.” I pointed to the couch-bed. “We need to talk.”

“Yes, Ty. We do.” Jason took a seat. “No note, no nothing. Where the hell were you yesterday?”

He knew where I was…Ryker’s controlling his thoughts without even trying, I could tell. I cleared my throat and took a deep refreshing breath of stale apartment air. “Your dad…I found him.”

“What?” Jason’s affect flattened. “I thought he died.”

“Wow, our family’s fucked up.” I joined my cousin on the couch. “Only thing that’s normal is that my dad didn’t marry your mom.”

“You take that back right now.” Jason scooted away. “If your father’s as much of a crook as you say he is, there’s no way he’d marry my mom.”

Literal-minded twat. Even Emo Kid knew the concept of figurative speech. “Sorry, Jace. Jun—, I mean you mom, may be a color-obsessed acid trip, but at least she doesn’t try to kill her own children.”

Jason sighed. “Where is he?”

“He wants to meet up somewhere…and see you.”

My words drained the energy out of the kid. Something besides Ryker’s release had changed while he was on that cruise. My inner intuition hit the nail on the head; he wasn’t ready for a Gelardi family reunion with more then two people in it.

I clasped onto his shoulder and sighed. “Your place has a hot tub, doesn’t it?”

“Yeah.” He said flatly. “But it wouldn’t be the same without Noel.”

“There’s more to hot tubs than sex, Jace.” I let go and stood up. “They’re a good way to relax, and I know you’re gonna need it.”

“You…have a point.” He went into the bedroom. Didn’t realize it was gonna be this easy to get him to strip down. He was gonna need a stronger backbone to stand up to that bastard Kyle, and to Lance someday.
