The drive home didnât leave much of an impact, not that I expected it to. Jason wasnât home when I got back, giving me a much-needed opportunity to call his drug dealer of a father. After checking the timeâearly enoughâI gave Josh a ring.
âHello?â Joshâs raspy voice creaked through the phone line.
âJosh, itâs Tyler. Finally found ya.â
âTyler? Howâd you get my number?â
I shat out an explanation he could understand, including going bum-fuck north where they fucked cows for a living. âI want to know more about my father. Heâs gonna puke out bricks for what he did to Cam.â
âYou donât remember?â
Of course I didnât, dipshit. âNo, Josh. I donât.â
âItâs a little much to say over the phone, but you know what? Iâll talk. On one condition.â
âWhich is?â
âJason listens too. I want to see my son. Bring Justin as well if you can. Call me when youâre ready.â
I hung up. Guess Josh didnât know where Justin was after his own prison term. To be fair, it was kind of ironic that the only straight guy in my generation ended up in Gaytown. Good riddanceâheâs just as bad as my father.
As if he could sense my presence from TCSâs office, Jason barged into the apartment with open arms. âTyler!â
âCalm your jets, Jace.â I pointed to the couch-bed. âWe need to talk.â
âYes, Ty. We do.â Jason took a seat. âNo note, no nothing. Where the hell were you yesterday?â
He knew where I wasâ¦Rykerâs controlling his thoughts without even trying, I could tell. I cleared my throat and took a deep refreshing breath of stale apartment air. âYour dadâ¦I found him.â
âWhat?â Jasonâs affect flattened. âI thought he died.â
âWow, our familyâs fucked up.â I joined my cousin on the couch. âOnly thing thatâs normal is that my dad didnât marry your mom.â
âYou take that back right now.â Jason scooted away. âIf your fatherâs as much of a crook as you say he is, thereâs no way heâd marry my mom.â
Literal-minded twat. Even Emo Kid knew the concept of figurative speech. âSorry, Jace. Junâ, I mean you mom, may be a color-obsessed acid trip, but at least she doesnât try to kill her own children.â
Jason sighed. âWhere is he?â
âHe wants to meet up somewhereâ¦and see you.â
My words drained the energy out of the kid. Something besides Rykerâs release had changed while he was on that cruise. My inner intuition hit the nail on the head; he wasnât ready for a Gelardi family reunion with more then two people in it.
I clasped onto his shoulder and sighed. âYour place has a hot tub, doesnât it?â
âYeah.â He said flatly. âBut it wouldnât be the same without Noel.â
âThereâs more to hot tubs than sex, Jace.â I let go and stood up. âTheyâre a good way to relax, and I know youâre gonna need it.â
âYouâ¦have a point.â He went into the bedroom. Didnât realize it was gonna be this easy to get him to strip down. He was gonna need a stronger backbone to stand up to that bastard Kyle, and to Lance someday.
